Museum Etiquette: What You Should and Shouldn’t Do On Your Next Museum Visit

Are you interested in visiting a museum in the near future? If you are, is this the first time that you are looking to do so? If it is, you should know that there are certain rules of etiquette that you should follow when in a museum. For that reason, it is advised that you take the time to familiarize yourself with common museum etiquette before you make your next museum visit.

Perhaps, the most important rule to follow, when on a museum tour, is to not touch. Of course, there may be some expectations to this rule. With that in mind, if you don’t know, don’t touch. The handling of pricey museum items can result in a decrease in value or damages. Even if the item is encased in glass, you are urged against touching the casing. This is important, as someone has to clean up all fingerprints, often on a regular basis, as museums have standards that need to be upheld. That is why you should be courteous of others and keep your hands to yourself.

Another museum etiquette rule that you should follow involves being patient and waiting your turn. This is most important in museums with small exhibits or displays, such as art museums. You will want to be respectful of all other visitors inside the museum. Waiting a few moments to view a beautiful piece of artwork is not that long of a wait. From your own vantage point, having a few minutes worth of patience can also get you the best view in the house. If you are in a rush, simply visit the next piece in line and then return when possible.

It is also advised that you turn off all cell phones or music devices before entering a museum, no matter what type you are touring. You will also want to try and keep your voice at an appropriate level. Of course, talking and discussing what you see is allowed, but you should be respectful of all others when doing so. You need to remember that many museum visitors are interested in taking in the exhibits in a professional, relaxing environment. That is why all cell phones and music devices should be shut off or left at home.

Another etiquette rule that you may want to follow involves leaving big bulking items, like backpacks at home. In fact, there are some museums that prohibit the wearing of coats or the carrying of backpacks or large purses. Even if no restrictions are in place, you will want to use your best judgment. Big bulky briefcases and bags can significantly reduce the viewing space inside a museum.

Most importantly, it is advised that you follow all rules. All museums should have their rules and restrictions, like the banning of photographs or food and drinks, posted in their entranceways. You may also want to take the time to visit the online website of the museum you are interested in visiting. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the rules and restrictions in place or let you know if you can even follow them.

The above mentioned tips are etiquette tips that can help you on your next museum visit. It is important to mention these tips are designed for museums that are adult in nature. Often times, you will find that kid’s museums have little rules when it comes to their exhibits, as they tend to promote education through play and experimentation.
